Screen geography explained

What is real—and what is fictional?

Shipton Abbott belongs to the story. Looe and the wider Cornish locations belong to real communities.

Fictional

  • Shipton Abbott: the programme's fictional Devon town.
  • Shipton Abbott police station: a fictional service represented on screen by a real civic building.
  • Character homes and workplaces: story locations that may use private or working real-world premises.

Real

  • Looe, Cornwall: the principal visual foundation for the town, harbour and many connecting street scenes.
  • Looe Guildhall: the recognisable exterior used for the fictional police station.
  • The harbour, bridge and Banjo Pier: real working and public spaces used within the programme's screen geography.
  • Pentillie, Port Eliot and the Tamar Valley: real locations associated with particular settings and the wider production area.

How location claims are labelled

An exact screen building is different from a documented scene area, a recurring filming area or a broader production association. Coastal Clues keeps those levels separate and links to its evidence register.

Visiting without crossing a line

A public television appearance does not turn a private home, closed set, working quay or restricted building into a visitor attraction. Use public viewpoints, follow local notices and never obstruct access for residents or harbour users.
